The Jewell County Conservation District conducted a field day for Rock Hills 5th Graders on September 22, 2009. The day began with plugging an abandoned well. Sherry Koster, our County Sanitarian led the demonstration. First, students poured in a gallon of chlorine, then shoveled sand into the well. A fifty pound bag of bentonite was poured in to form a barrier or "plug". Finally the students joined forces and filled the rest of the hole with top soil.
After lunch, we did a Conservation Tour at the District's Farm, located 1/2 mile west of the USDA Service Center.
Range Specialist, Dwayne Rice, talked to the students about range plant identification and what makes good soil.
District Forester, Jim Strine, had many touchable tree samples and discussed the importance of trees in our world.
District Fisheries Biologist, Scott Waters, brought plastic samples of the fish found in local waters and handouts for the students.
Buffer Coordinator, Kathleen Thomas, demonstrated the effects of moving water with a Stream Flow Trailer.
District Conservationist Mike Waite, worked students through an Enviroscape and demonstrated the workings of a watershed.
One more station, a Water Jeopardy game, was led by Sherry Koster.
